Consequences of the Sep 07 Meyer Store fire have reached the shores of New Zealand. Today (06/01/08) I attended an insurance ‘fire sale’ in Auckland and purchsed some great bargins and quality goods, albeit a little smoke damaged. I also found out the entire stock was from Meyer’s, Hobart, so I had to go online to check out news of the day. Sorry Hobart, the retail bargins have become Auckland’s gain. I am however, glad to see that Meyers have since reopend their store in your city (pity about the demolished old building and wonderful facade).
Signed,
Kiwi Bargin Shopper
Maeria. Thats an interesting thing to here because they cancelled the fire sale for insurance reasons and said everyting was buried and destroyed at the dump
Greg… uuummmm very interesting? Well, I can say one can buy anything; Clothing, Toys, Shoes, Handbags, Towels, Linen, Kitchenware, Cutlery sets, Whiteware, Appliances,Books… the list goes on! Original labels and ticketing on packaging and cartons clearly indicate Meyers, Hobart. I understand the sale will run here in Auckland for up to 3 months and are unpacking containers daily.
Makes me wonder what is going on. Myer has been surfing the huge range of support so it does make me wonder if they have been doing some form of shady dealings. If you can remember where can you let me know, i am interested in dropping a call to the paper and getting some attention on this.
Greg… I suspect this is purely an outcome of a commercial business decision. They have chosen to offload ‘cheap goods’ off shore via tender to protect their local market (perhaps)and an auction house in NZ completed the equation for them. Check out the google search I have just done…

Maeria – fantastic!
I emailed the paper back and forward today and the journalist seemed quite excited having confirmed the details and the stock. Auckland definitely got our fire sale!
Greg… good stuff! Seek and ye shall find. It’s amazing communication technology today is instant – it’s a small world after all! No more fires Hobart! Even though I have always enjoyed shopping at Myer’s (with correct spelling).
Cheers!
Maeria – front page news today at http://www.news.com.au/mercury/story/0,22884,23026788-921,00.html about the Kiwis getting our fire sale!
Greg… wow, that is something! Nothing like keeping them honest! I am surprised by the comments of the ’staff member’. Keep up the good work and I have enjoyed many of our pic’s!
Cheers!
