The Separate Prison

From outside of Hobart today at Port Arthur, South East of Hobart.

The Separate Prison at Port Arthur was a Model Prison for two reasons:

1. It was modeled on the experimental Pentonville Prison in London and featured similar conditions right down to the conditions and furnishings.

2. The principal of the Separate Prison was an advanced concept for its day and substituted silence for the lash, taught the imates useful trades and subjected convicts to the “moralising” influences of religion and was considered a “model” of instruction and reformation.
