In Defence of Hobart

From the time of the first official white settlement of the Derwent in 1803 there was concern over the possibility of attack by sea amd it was realised that the township could easily be subjected to naval attack.
After many delays the defences of Hobart including Bellerive Battery pictured here were ready in 1885 just in time for a Russian war scare associated with the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. The defences however never fied a shot in anger.

Lovely picture, and the view with the gun is amazing, we have a lot of old cannons around here from the british era.
Thanks Destituerebel – its a beautiful place. Saddly while there were 6 batteries in total this is the best preserved of the lot
