Today’s picture is of the French Memorial Fountain created in 1972 to mark the bicentenary of the first of a number of French voyages of discovery that visited Tasmania.

The French naturalist Jacques Labillardiere visited Tasmania twice and laid the foundations of his collection of flora, the Novae Hollandiae Plantarum Specimen, a collection of flora of Australia.

The garden surrounding the fountain is representative of plants he collected and described during his visits.
